Wig Subsidy for Medical Hair Loss

Jessica’s Wig Salon is an approved Health NZ provider offering the Wig Subsidy for individuals experiencing medical hair loss. This subsidy helps reduce the cost of wigs or hairpieces.

The Wig Subsidy is designed with the well-being of clients in mind, ensuring that those facing hair loss due to medical conditions such as cancer, alopecia, or other health challenges do not have to compromise on quality or style.

Who can claim this subsidy?

You may be eligible to claim this subsidy if you meet the following criteria:

+ You are a citizen of New Zealand or are ordinarily a resident in New Zealand.
+ You have a medical condition that has caused hair loss, such as cancer treatment, alopecia, or other scalp conditions. Your specialist or GP must provide you with a current medical certificate that includes your NHI number, information about the hair loss condition, and whether the hair loss is permanent or temporary.

What can I use this subsidy for?

The subsidy payment covers the cost of the following items:
+ wig or hairpiece
+ headwear (hats, caps, and head coverings)

Your entitlement

If you are an adult (18 years or older) the amount you are entitled to depends on whether your hair loss is permanent or temporary. However, if you are under 18, your entitlement remains the same regardless of whether the hair loss is temporary or permanent.

Adults with permanent hair loss

Your entitlement is $2330.66 (including GST) over nine years. You may claim all or part of your $2330.66 entitlement at any time during the nine years.

Adults with temporary hair loss

Your entitlement is $408.88 (including GST) for a one year period. You can claim all or part of your $408.88 entitlement at any time during this period.

Children (temporary or permanent hair loss)

If you are under 18, you are entitled to $1226.66 (including GST) over a period of three years, or until you turn 18, whichever comes first. You can claim all or part of your $1226.66 entitlement at any time during this period.

What if the wig or topper costs more than I am entitled to?

If you purchase an item that exceeds your entitlement balance, you will be responsible for paying the additional cost. JESSICA’S WIG SALON will process your claim, and you will only need to pay the amount that exceeds the subsidy. For instance, if you are experiencing temporary hair loss and choose a wig or hairpiece that costs $495, your final payment will be $86.12.

What if my hair grows back and I lose it again?

At the end of your temporary entitlement, if you experience hair loss again and it is still classified as temporary, your second claim will be handled the same way as your first claim. You will be eligible for an entitlement of $408.88 for one year from the date you make your first purchase after experiencing hair loss again.

How do I claim?

Your GP or specialist will provide you with a medical certificate or letter. After selecting your wig, hairpiece or head covering, JESSICA’S WIG SALON will apply your entitlement to reduce the cost of your purchase.
